Spurs dampen Clippers buzz with big win (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? San Antonio squashed some of the hype surrounding the revamped Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday with a 115-90 victory that lifted the Spurs to 2-0 in the new season.

A blockbuster trade for point guard Chris Paul, and the acquisition of starters Chauncey Billups and Caron Butler, created a buzz about the Clippers that only grew after their season-opening victory over Golden State on Sunday.

However, San Antonio brought them crashing back to Earth on Wednesday with Manu Ginobili scoring 24 points and DeJuan Blair adding 20. The Spurs shot 56 percent for the game.

San Antonio padded a four-point half-time lead into a 25-point advantage in the third, making 16-of-21 shots to add 38 to their tally. Tony Parker added 10 of his 14 points in the decisive quarter to go with his nine assists.

At the other end, San Antonio smothered Los Angeles during the second half where they held them to just 36 points.

"Tonight the best part of our game was our defense," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters. "Shots went in tonight. Some nights they don't drop but the one thing you can control is your defensive intensity."

Blake Griffin led the Clippers (1-1) with 28 points and nine rebounds and four other Clippers finished in double digits, including Paul with 10.

But Los Angeles had trouble defending the wily Spurs who drained 10 three-pointers on the night, including five from Ginobili. Richard Jefferson also made three and finished with 19 points.

"They shot 52 percent from three, it's tough to win like that," Griffin said. "They hit some tough shots, you have to give it to them. We have to make sure we come out on our game after halftime."

Funeral pending for Texas woman, children killed in Veracruz

Read?more: Local, State, Crime, Christina Hartsell, Maria Hartsell, Karla Hartsell, Margaret Schneider, Passenger Bus Attack, Drug War, Deadly Attack, Drug Cartels, Gunmen, El Higo, Veracruz, Cleburne, Texas Action 4 News Rio Grande Valley, Mexico

Funeral arrangements are being made for a Cleburne, Texas mother and two teenage sisters killed by gunmen attacking a passenger bus in Veracruz.

Maria Hartsell was on a bus heading to visit her mother in Veracruz last Thursday when gunmen stormed the bus in a robbery spree.

The gunmen killed seven people aboard three passenger buses.

Just days before leaving to visit family in Mexico, 13-year-old Christina Hartsell wrote her father - urging him, 'don't worry.'

The teen took pictures of her journey south but travelling overnight on Mexico's highways proved more dangerous than she imagined.

?It's tragic what happened,? Christina?s grandmother Margaret Schneider told KTVT-TV. ?It was just a tragedy, totally unnecessary.?

Schneider learned Thursday about that happened.

The gunmen killed Christina, her mother Maria and Christina's half-sister Karla.

?I'm not her biological grandma, Karla's, but I loved her like my own,? Schneider told the Dallas-based TV station. ?She always came up and gave me a hug and said, I love you grandmother.?

The suspected drug cartel attack targeting innocent civilians is leaving many puzzled.

?I just don't understand why they would kill those girls,? Schneider said. ?I just don't understand.?

Two other siblings survived the attack: 15-year-old Angie, who suffers from down syndrome and 10-year-old Micheal.

?His mother getting shot, his sisters getting shot - he witnessed it all,? Schneider said.

The grieving grandmother said her daughter-in-law Maria was anxious to see her own ailing mother and ignored warnings not to travel to Mexico.

?All the family advised her not to go, but she still went,? Schneider said.?

Sony Ericsson reserves Xperia Ion name; could be for the LT28at flagship model

We recently reported on a possible flagship model for Sony Ericsson that appeared on the Bluetooth SIG site. With a 4.55 inch Reality display weighing in at 720p, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and a 13MP camera, this device promises to raise the bar in the Android world. The one thing about the phone that definitely needs to be changed is the code name LT28at that the unit has been branded with at the moment. We would imagine that a name change is coming since LT28at doesn't exactly roll off your tongue.

Actually, when Sony Ericsson starts its special presentation at the upcoming CES on January 9th, we might see this model rolled out as the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ion. The joint venture filed for a trademark on the Xperia Ion name on December 13th with a serial number of 85493863. The trademark application is requested for mobile phones, the same answer Sony Ericsson put down for its trademark applications on the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY and Sony Ericsson Xperia arc.

This will probably be the last flagship model to have the Sony Ericsson branding. Sony announced earlier this year that it is buying out its partner in the joint venture and will be dropping the Ericsson name from its phones sometime in the middle of next year.

It also picked up the Tony award for best musical and a slew of others to boot; not bad for a show that contains a song with a refrain of "Fuck you, God," and a tribe leader named "General Butt-Fucking-Naked." Proof that commercial theatre could still be fun, legitimately funny, finely crafted, critically acclaimed and hugely successful, without resorting to stunt-casting or an old movie title.

Congress hopes to wrap up work on payroll tax cuts

(AP) ? Capping a full retreat by House GOP leaders, Congress will convene Friday in hopes of approving a stopgap measure renewing payroll tax cuts for every worker and unemployment benefits for millions ? despite serious opposition among some tea party Republicans.

Friday's unusual session, if all goes according to plan, will send a bill to President Barack Obama to become law for two months and put off until January a fight over how to pay for the 2 percentage point tax cut, extend jobless benefits averaging around $300 a week and prevent doctors from absorbing a big cut in Medicare payments.

Those goals had been embraced by virtually every lawmaker in the House and Senate, but had been derailed in a quarrel over demands by House Republicans for immediate negotiations on a long-term extension bill. Senate leaders of both parties had tried to barter such an agreement among themselves a week ago but failed, instead agreeing upon a 60-day measure to buy time for talks next year.

The decision by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to cave in to the Senate came after days of criticism from Obama and Democrats. But perhaps more tellingly, GOP stalwarts like strategist Karl Rove and the Wall St. Journal editorial board warned that if the tax cuts were allowed to expire, Republicans would take a political beating that would harm efforts to unseat Obama next year.

Friday's House and Senate sessions are remarkable. Both chambers have recessed for the holidays but leaders in both parties are trying to pass the short-term agreement under debate rules that would allow any individual member of Congress to derail the pact, at least for a time.

The developments were a clear win for Obama. The payroll tax cut was the centerpiece of his three-month, campaign-style drive for jobs legislation that seems to have contributed to an uptick in his poll numbers ? and taken a toll on those of congressional Republicans.

Obama, Republicans and congressional Democrats all said they preferred a one-year extension but the politics of achieving the goal, particularly the spending cuts and new fees required to pay for it, eluded them. All pledged to start working on that in January.

"There remain important differences between the parties on how to implement these policies, and it is critical that we protect middle-class families from a tax increase while we work them out," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said.

House GOP arguments about the legislative process and what the "uncertainty" of a two-month extension would mean for businesses were unpersuasive, and Obama was clearly on the offensive.

"Has this place become so dysfunctional that even when we agree to things, we can't do it?" Obama said. "Enough is enough."

The top Senate Republican, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, was a driving force behind Thursday's agreement, imploring Boehner to accept the deal that McConnell and Reid had struck last week and passed with overwhelming support in both parties.

Meanwhile, tea party-backed House Republicans began to abandon their leadership.

"I don't think that my constituents should have a tax increase because of Washington's dysfunction," freshman Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis., said.

If the cuts had expired as scheduled, 160 million workers would have seen a tax increase of $20 a week for an average worker earning about $50,000 a year. And up to 2 million people without jobs for six months would start losing unemployment benefits averaging $300 a week. Doctors would have seen a 27 percent cut in their Medicare payments, the product of an archaic 1997 cut that Congress has been unable to fix.

Even though GOP leaders like House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., promised that the two sides could quickly iron out their differences, the truth is that it'll take intense talks to figure out both the spending cuts and fee increases required to finance the measure.

Just hours before he announced the breakthrough, Boehner had made the case for a yearlong extension. But on a brief late afternoon conference call, he informed his colleagues it was time to yield.

"He said that as your leader, you've in effect asked me to make decisions easy and difficult, and I'm making my decision right now," said Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., paraphrasing Boehner's comments.

Kingston said the conference call lasted just minutes and Boehner did not give anyone time to respond.

There was still carping among tea party freshmen upset that GOP leaders had yielded.

"Even though there is plenty of evidence this is a bad deal for America ... the House has caved yet again to the president and Senate Democrats," Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., said. "We were sent here with a clear set of instructions from the American people to put an end to business as usual in Washington, yet here we are being asked to sign off on yet another gimmick."

Almost forgotten in the firestorm is that McConnell and Boehner had extracted a major victory last week, winning a provision that would require Obama to make a swift decision on whether to approve construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would bring Canadian oil to the U.S. and create thousands of construction jobs. To block the pipeline, Obama would have to declare that is not in the nation's interest.

Obama wanted to put the decision off until after the 2012 election.

House Republicans did win one concession in addition to a promise that Senate Democrats would name negotiators on the one-year House measure: a provision to ease concerns that the 60-day extension would be hard for payroll processing companies to implement.

CA: California high-speed rail jobs estimate too good to be true

Though California's high-speed train faces an intensifying backlash over its $99 billion price tag, political leaders from Washington to Sacramento justify the cost by touting another huge number: 1 million jobs the rail line is supposed to create.

But like so many of the promises made to voters who approved the bullet train, those job estimates appear too good to be true.

A review by this newspaper found the railroad would create only 20,000 to 60,000 jobs during an average year and employ only a few thousand people permanently if it's built.

"They have a really hard sales pitch with the real numbers, so they've fudged the numbers," said state Sen. Doug LaMalfa, a Chico-area Republican who is introducing legislation to send the rail line back to voters. "C'mon, a million people working on a 520-mile railroad? I practically laughed out loud when (I heard that)."

One million people -- more than the combined workforce of San Jose and San Francisco -- would have to cram shoulder-to-shoulder just to fit along the rail line between San Francisco and Anaheim.

In trying to win over a skeptical public to support the most expensive public works project for any state in U.S. history, Gov. Jerry Brown, the Obama administration, Democratic lawmakers and big city mayors such as San Jose's Chuck Reed have repeated the 1-million-jobs mantra.

"The facts are clear: Over 1 million good-paying jobs will be created," House Minority Leader Nancy

Pelosi said in a statement last week.

But state leaders, it turns out, quietly beefed up employment estimates. First, they counted every year of work as a separate job. So if one person were to work 10 years, that would count as 10 jobs. Next, they figured outside companies, such as restaurants and retailers, would hire two new people for every single construction worker.

Grand total: 20,000 construction workers and 40,000 "spinoff" employees -- each working the entire 22-year project -- would count as more than 1 million jobs.

In reality, high-speed rail's construction jobs would lower the state's current unemployment rate from 11.3 percent to just 11.2 percent.

"Job-years and jobs are like apples and Twinkies, they're not even in the same food group," said Elizabeth Alexis, a Palo Alto analyst who testified before Congress about the project last week. "It's not accurate, and it's misleading; (most of the) people who thought they're getting jobs are not getting jobs."

    'Shorthand' conceded

Project officials conceded they need to explain the job figures more clearly, particularly with their credibility on the line.

"To the extent that we use jobs, it's been as a shorthand (for years of employment). It's an easier way," said Dan Richard, who Brown appointed to the California High-Speed Rail Authority Board controlling the project. "It's absolutely fair that we should be more disciplined about that going forward. At the end of the day, I don't know if it really changes anything. The bottom line is if you're unemployed, you don't care if it's jobs or job-years."

Government agencies routinely calculate temporary construction jobs by the year, but it's unusual for public officials to lump all those estimates together. For instance, the White House tells recipients of stimulus funds not to count workers multiple times like officials have done on the rail project, which received $2.25 billion from those grants.

It's also common for planners to calculate spinoff jobs for huge public works projects. But unlike high-speed rail, they usually separate construction and spinoff jobs in touting the numbers, like the Valley Transportation Authority does when promoting the BART extension to San Jose. And not everyone agrees high-speed rail will be the economic boon for outside industries that officials are assuming, particularly since construction would begin in a remote Central Valley location.

Critics say the job questions are just the latest example of supporters misleading the public.

When voters approved the project in 2008, they were told it would cost $33 billion, a price tag that has since roughly tripled. Since the vote, the start date of full service also has been pushed back from 2020 to 2034, expected rider counts have dwindled and sources of funding have dried up. A Field Poll earlier this month found less than one-third of Californians would approve the project today.

    Key differences

Michael Rossi, Brown's jobs czar and another project board member, said "there was no plan to mislead anyone by manipulating the numbers."

But supporters always publicly refer to the huge employment totals as "jobs" -- sometimes even saying that the first leg of the project will put 100,000 "people" to work -- without explaining that the figures represent years of work, and that two-thirds of the jobs are expected spinoff positions.

"They want you to believe that when this thing gets under construction that there are 100,000 individual bodies working around on this project, which is totally bogus," said Aaron Fukuda, co-chair of a Central Valley group aimed at holding the rail authority accountable. "They're trying to legitimize a false number."

What's more, officials have not taken into account the potential job losses from the railroad, which will displace many businesses along the train route, including several along the Caltrain corridor between San Francisco and San Jose. And within the last month, the California Legislative Analyst's Office said other state programs could cut jobs so the state can afford the $20 billion debt to pay its portion of the rail line.

Rail authority spokeswoman Rachel Wall said the first leg of construction "will create a ripple effect throughout the state" and provide desperately needed paychecks, particularly within the hard-hit construction industry. In addition to temporary construction jobs, the rail authority expects to hire a staff of 4,150 permanent workers to run the railroad.

Despite the evidence, supporters are not expected to abandon their jobs campaign anytime soon.

"However you tabulate the exact jobs and spinoff economic activity numbers," said U.S. Rep. Dennis Cardoza, a Central Valley Democrat and supporter, "there is no doubt that this project will provide an economic boost in the San Joaquin Valley, where unemployment figures are among the highest in the nation."

    Contact Mike Rosenberg at 408-920-5705.

    The official tally
1 million: Estimated in job-years, meaning that if a person works a job for 10 years, it's counted as 10 jobs.

    What we counted
60,000 total: There will be 20,000 construction workers and as many as 40,000
    "spinoff" workers at a time.

    AFTER CONSTRUCTION
4,150: The number of permanent employees who are projected to work on the railroad if it is fully built.

ConnectYard Connects Students and Profs Via Text, Social Media (Mashable)

The Spark of Genius Series highlights a unique feature of startups and is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here. Name: ConnectYard

[More from Mashable: 6 Crazy Tech Predictions for 2012]

Quick Pitch: A social media platform that connects students and professors through their preferred form of communication.

Genius Idea: A professor emails a student and it?s delivered in whatever form the student prefers, such as a text message or Twitter and Facebook post.

[More from Mashable: How Facebook Conquered the Social Web in 2011]

More students these days prefer interacting on mobile devices and social media sites over traditional forms of communication such as email. To help eliminate the communication barriers between students and their professors, institutions from Cornell University to Georgia State University are turning to a social platform called ConnectYard that allows them both to send and receive messages however they like.

If students prefer interacting through text messages or on Facebook and Twitter, they can send messages to their professors this way. In turn, professors can receive and send responses however they prefer ? and typically, that?s through email, according to ConnectYard CEO Donald Doane.

"Faculty isn?t always keen on adopting new technology and many don?t want to encroach on the personal space of students on social networking sites," Doane told Mashable. "ConnectYard allows students and professors to interact on the platforms they prefer to use. If a teacher cancels a class and sends an email to students, some students might choose to receive the message as a text or Facebook post instead."

Students can also respond to messages on whatever platform they choose. If they are on Facebook and send an email to their professor about a class, the professor can receive it through email.

"We wanted to give students and faculty an easy way to reach each other and interact without having anyone change their communication habits," Doane said. "We?ve had great success with it so far and more institutions are jumping on board."

ConnectYard also integrates with other popular learning platforms such as Blackboard and Desire2Learn, so students and professors can post and respond to queries, and the site archives all interactions as a reference, regardless of where they originate.

In addition, if a student is reading an ebook, she can pose a question from their ereader and the professor can respond via email, It will then show up directly in the the student's ebook notes on the device.

"ConnectYard is flexible in how it allows students and faculty members communicate," Doane said. "Everyone prefers to communicate in different ways, so we want to make sure people can interact with others however they feel most comfortable -- whether it's just through email or through a high-tech device or social platform."

Japan yoy department store sales fall in November

RBR Staff Writer Published 19 December 2011

Japanese department store sales fell 1.9% in November from the same month last year, according to the Japan Department Stores Association.

The three-month moving average was a 1.6% decline, a little change from the August-October period and demand had been 'relatively solid,' reported Business Week.

J Front Retailing, a major department stores operator, reported Christmas cake sales were up 10% from a year earlier. Sales at Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings's flagship store in central Tokyo increased 6.4% in November.

The Topix Retail Trade Index rose 2.7% in the past six months, outperforming the broader Topix index's 11.2% decrease. Retail sales increased a more-than-estimated 1.9% in October from the same month a year earlier, the biggest jump since August 2010.

Teacher writes 'stupid' on student's forehead

    By msnbc.com staff

LIVINGSTON, Tenn. -- A first-year teacher from Overton County may lose his job after writing the word "stupid" across a student?s forehead?with permanent marker, a district official told WSMV-TV in Nashville.

The math teacher has been suspended indefinitely, Matt Eldridge, director of the Overton County Schools, told the NBC?television station.

"We're here to help the children and not to hurt them," Eldridge said, adding "One word can break a child. I mean, I've got three children. I wouldn't want it done to mine."

    Read complete coverage from WSMV.com

The incident happened last week at Allons Elementary, where a student asked a question and the teacher responded by writing on the child?s forehead in front of his classmates, Eldridge told the TV station. The teacher also wrote the word "stupid" backward on the student's forehead, so he'd be able to read it when he saw himself in the mirror, he said.

"The teacher said, 'I was trying to joke with him,' and of course, I said, 'That?s not the way you joke with anyone,'" Eldridge said.

Allons Elementary is a K-8 school with a few hundred students just outside Livingston.

"It's kind of one of those mistakes that's hard to correct," Eldridge said.

Remains of 15 dirty war victims found in Argentina (AP)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? Argentine judicial officials say anthropologists have discovered a common grave with the remains of at least 15 people apparently slain by a military dictatorship.

The Argentine judicial system reported in a news release that forensic anthropologists found the remains at what was a major clandestine detention center holding suspected dissidents during the 1976-1983 dictatorship.

Some of the victims had their hands tied and they appeared to have been shot.

The investigators are helping a judge probe activities at a military arsenal in the northern state of Tucuman during an army crackdown on leftist guerrillas.

Human rights groups say about 30,000 people were killed under the military regime.

Talking Bubble Insurance with BeatTheBubble.com Founder Hilly ...

    Beat The Bubble

In the grand scheme of things, bubble insurance is a relatively new product in the online poker world. The concept has been gaining publicity in the poker industry as of late, as evidenced by the launch of Bubble Protection; however, did you know that Bubble Protection was not the first company of its kind? In fact, the first in the niche market was actually Beat The Bubble, conceived and developed by industry veteran Hilly Ehrlich.

The concept of Beat The Bubble is that it offers players ?bubble cover? in any online tournament of 32 or more players, meaning you can extend the tournament?s bubble an additional one, two, or three spots, depending on the selected package. The price varies based upon the tournament?s buy-in: 5 percent for one spot bubble cover, 7.5 percent for two, and 10 percent for three.

?It?s an idea I first thought of about four to five years ago. I?ve worked with poker networks since 2001, and I was working with PartyPoker and we were thinking of ways we could add real poker products to the network that people would appreciate,? Ehrlich explained in an interview with PokerNews.

?I always thought this was a good one purely because it is a poker product. It?s not necessarily for everyone. It?s pretty much the same as when you go into a casino and sit down at a blackjack table where you?ll notice people that do buy insurance against a dealer?s blackjack, and there are people who never buy it. It?s probably the worst bet in the whole casino, but people buy it.?

    Hilly Ehrlich

    Hilly Ehrlich

Ehrlich elaborated on the service?s origin:

?Bill Rini is actually a collaborator in this service, and how it came about was we were sitting in a bar in Bangkok a year ago and he brought up bubble insurance, which we had previously spoken about. He told me that was something that I should do. I said, ?Bill, are you confident??"

?He said, ?Yes, because it was always a good idea, it?s a poker product, and there will be people who will use it time and again.? I had a bit of spare time at that moment, had a good programmer, and so I did. It didn?t take long, like three months, which is pretty good when entering something like this.?

The idea of bubble insurance has been highly criticized by some industry experts; many claim there is no positive expected value in using the service. Refreshingly, Ehrlich is unabashed when it comes to his product, openly admitting that it is not for everyone. Moreover, he goes so far to say that there is no measurable EV in having bubble cover, though he does suggest it has its benefits:

?If there is any EV, it?s invisible,? Ehrlich said. ?By that I mean I?ve had quite a bit of feedback from players who?ve come back and said that having bubble cover gave them enough confidence during the bubble period to push back against the big stacks, allowing him to get into the money. The whole point is to get into the money, so that?s someplace where it has value. If it has helped at all, its not because they fall on the bubble and they get their money back, it?s not about that, it?s about getting through the bubble into the money.?

To encourage players to give bubble cover a whirl, Ehrlich and company have made the process as simple as possible. Beat The Bubble has a polished site where you?re able to obtain protection either by using your account balance or via player-to-player transfer, as long as your online poker site offers the latter option. In addition, Beat The Bubble has developed a popular coupon system that works in unison with various loyalty stores, like ones found on 888Poker and Everest Poker, among others.

As Ehrlich explained: ?We?ve developed a coupon for Beat The Bubble where people can go in to the store and buy a bubble coupon for various amounts, which they pay for with their points, redeem the coupon by going to the site and registering, and suddenly they got credit they can use to buy into a tournament and be covered for that event.?

While Bubble Protection and Beat The Bubble are essentially the same in concept, there are differences in execution. Ehrlich believes that aside from the cost, Beat The Bubble?s reach provides an advantage: ?I think the difference between us and Bubble Protection is that we don?t limit you to PartyPoker and PokerStars, we actually cover all the networks and pretty much every online event that has 32 entrants in it. We have a calculator on our site which allows you to enter the amount of entrants, the buy-in, and it will calculate exactly what your bubble insurance will cost and what your payout will be.?

On the market since April, Beat The Bubble has not been without its fair share of obstacles. Launched shortly before Black Friday, the service immediately faced a major setback, notably the loss of the U.S. market and one of poker?s biggest sites, Full Tilt Poker. Now, half a year later, Ehrlich and company have recovered and refocused.

?Black Friday did change a lot because the numbers have gone down, Full Tilt disappeared, and a lot of things happened in these last six months that you could say changed the landscape, pretty much forever,? Ehrlich said. ?Now we?re seeing a lot of players come back, we get quite a lot of repeat business, so we plan on taking it a bit more seriously and put some marketing into it. There?s been pretty much no marketing at all.?

Beat The Bubble is free to join, which you can do simply by visiting their site. While there, you can also direct any questions, concerns, or comments to their Customer Service Team. Finally, be sure to like Beat The Bubble on Facebook.

(AP) ? Two giant pandas from China landed Sunday in Scotland, where they will become the first to live in Britain in nearly two decades.

The 8-year-old pair, named Tian Tian and Yang Guang ? or Sweetie and Sunshine ? were welcomed by bagpipe players and a host of dignitaries as they touched down at Edinburgh Airport on a specially chartered Boeing 777 flight called the "Panda Express."

The pandas, from the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan, are to stay for 10 years at Edinburgh Zoo, where officials hope they will give birth to cubs. The female, Tian Tian, has had twin cubs in the past, but not with Yang Guang. The male panda has previously fathered cubs as well.

The loan marked the beginning of a U.K.-China research program on the animals, and both sides have described it as a signal of a growing friendship between Scotland and China. China sometimes gives or lends the cuddly looking animals ? considered a Chinese national treasure ? to other countries to boost relations.

"It shows that we can cooperate closely not only on commerce, but on a broad range of environmental and cultural issues as well," said British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

Zoo officials have spent the past five years securing the loan of the animals, which are expected to boost Scottish tourism. The loan was announced in January, when Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang visited Britain to sign billions in trade deals.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland will pay more than 600,000 pounds ($935,000) a year to China for the loan of Sweetie and Sunshine, not including the expense of importing bamboo from the Netherlands.

The pair of pandas, which were given an in-flight meal of bamboo, apples and carrots, will have two weeks to settle at the zoo before going on display to the public. They will be kept in two separate enclosures for a few months until they are ready to be introduced to each other.

The zoo also plans to put four hidden "panda cams" in their enclosures and stream the footage online to attract viewers from around the world.

Britain's last giant panda, Ming Ming, lived in the London Zoo until 1994, when she was returned to China.

In 1974, British Prime Minister Edward Heath received two pandas from the Chinese government as a goodwill gift to mark his visit to China. Female Ching-Ching and male Chia-Chia became a much-loved attraction at the London Zoo, but never produced any cubs.

    Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a site that everyone who is interested in elearning should should visit at least once. In terms of its importance in the digital world, it shows potential to match Wikipedia. As a place where you can learn, or simply refresh your learning, in dozens of subjects, from algebra to economics to art history, I's easily one of the most useful, educational, and eye-opening places online to learn. And everything is free.

Khan Academy is an example of content conquering all. The video that teach the subject matter aren't flashy, don't use musical interludes, and aren't voiced by actors. The instruction is genuine, straightforward, and presented in a style that makes you feel like someone cares whether you get it.

    The History of Khan
Khan Academy started when a former hedge fund analyst, Sal Khan, began tutoring his cousins, who lived in different cities, in mathematics using Yahoo Doodle and a telephone. Tight on time and with other scheduling concerns, the MIT-educated Khan began recording screencasts of his help sessions so he could post them to YouTube, where his cousin could watch them at their own pace. Before long, other YouTube viewers were watching the videos, too, praising the material for finally helping them understand a concept they had been struggling to learn. Sal Khan told this story at a TED conference in early 2011, which has since led to increased recognition of his online Academy.

Now with around 20 employees, non-profit institution Khan Academy has been expanding to offer more videos, additional learning content?such as practice exercises and learning "coaches"?and several other features.

    What's Taught and What Isn't
The site needs a little more work in terms of structure, as the home page scrolls tirelessly through a long list of possible things to learn, grouped loosely by subject: seismic waves, inflation, the French Revolution, a 15-part series explaining the Paulson Bailout, and so on.

Khan Academy focuses on academic fields, for the most part, aimed at upper grade school and college-level students. But the beauty of free online learning is that anyone can attempt to learn, and indeed nothing restricts a user of any age or background from working through any of the material.

The site also covers what I would call "real life" subjects with an academic bent. For example, one set of videos explains the 2007 collapse of the U.S. housing market bubble. Another covers the ins and outs of mortgage-backed securities. But even this material is rooted in economics and mathematics. What you won't find are how-to lessons for learning things like setting up a blog (although you can find answers to that question and other similar ones on another site called Grovo).

    Features
Anyone can use Khan Academy, and you don't even have to sign up, although there are some benefits to creating a username and password. For starters, the site will remember which videos you've watched. Additionally, it can point you toward practice exercises that test your knowledge of things you've learned.

Enrolled users can also access a "coaching" feature. Coaches are guides for learners, whether a parent, teacher, tutor, or study buddy. A coach can see a learner's progress and suggest other lessons the learner should watch. Coaches and learners must mutually agree to the relationship, so there's no worry that some unknown person will be able to see what you're learning.

Another relatively new feature is goal-setting. Both learners and coaches can set up goals for a learner, such as watch five consecutive videos, although the feature is new and I had a hard time figuring out just how to use it effectively. If you create a goal, the default is to complete any five videos or exercises; to name the specific material you want to cover, you have to create a "custom goal." The feature still needs a little work so that users can set goals for themselves with greater ease.

Non-native English speakers and hard-of-hearing or deaf learners will be happy to know that you can turn on subtitles with one click. And Khan Academy has been working on translating its content into ten of the most popular languages worldwide: Arabic, Bengali, French, German, Hindi-Urdu, Indonesian, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.?

    Effective Online Learning
What makes video-based learning unique is that the learner can go at his or her own pace, re-watch videos or pause them to think through an idea, and fit it when it's most convenient. Khan Academy just gets it, keeping the actual videos frills-free and the material approachable. If you are a student, parent, or just a life-long learner, Khan Academy will become a household name. The site has been expanding rapidly, so a few growing pains are evident, particularly in terms of organizing the content to be searchable in different ways (i.e., drill-down method). The Goals feature could stand some improvement, too. But Khan's content is phenomenal, and that is what ultimately matters.

LA Galaxy wins 6-1 in Philippines friendly

    updated 10:39 a.m. ET Dec. 3, 2011

MANILA, Philippines - David Beckham scored the opening goal Saturday in the Los Angeles Galaxy's 6-1 win over the Philippine national team in a friendly that was part of the MLS champions' Asian tour.

Beckham gave his team the lead with a curling shot in the 20th minute, and Mike Magee was set up by Landon Donovan for the second goal before halftime. Adam Cristman added two goals in the second half, with Robby Keane and Greg Belhalter getting one apiece.

After being substituted midway through the second half, Beckham handed his shirt to boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, who was one of the about 13,000 spectators for the match. The former England captain said "I am a huge fan of his."

Despite the loss, Philippine coach Michael Weiss said he was "extremely unhappy" with his team's performance.

Phil Younghusband scored for the Philippines.

Newt Gingrich: A Dog that Won't Hunt (ContributorNetwork)

ANALYSIS | Newt Gingrich's candidacy is surging, buoyed by the sharp decline in support for Herman Cain and the lack of another viable candidate to serve as an alternative to Mitt Romney. Romney has so far failed to expand his base of support, which has allowed Rick Perry, Herman Cain and now Newt Gingrich to claim, in turn, the Big Brass Ring of being portrayed as national front-runner for the Republican Presidential nomination.

One of the problems that hamstrings Romney's attempt to break out and establish himself as the leading candidate to take on Barack Obama in the 2012 election is his reputation as a flip-flopping RINO (Republican In Name Only).

    Religion

RINO is a label that turns off true-blue, rock-ribbed Republicans, and conservatives are seeking one of their own who can win the nomination and beat Obama. However, a bigger problem threatening the viability of his candidacy may be Romney's religion. This also reflects a problem Gingrich will face as according to 2012 Republican Candidates, he was born a Lutheran, became a Southern Baptist after graduate school, and converted to Roman Catholicism in his 60's.

Many evangelical Christians, one of the most powerful voting blocs in the GOP, view Mormons as heretical cultists. Thus, Romney's religion may prevent him from gaining the nomination as evangelicals put a de facto veto on his candidacy.

Similarly, Newt also may be blocked by evangelicals as he has had three wives and three religions. His latest religion is Roman Catholicism, a bugaboo of many evangelicals, including the large Southern Baptist sect whose church Gingrich joined and then left. A lack of support among evangelicals disgusted with Newt's personal life may doom his candidacy.

    This Dog Won't Hunt

No Roman Catholic has ever been nominated for President by the Republican Party. Two divorced candidates, Ronald Regan and John McCain, have received the GOP nod, but both were seen as honorable men who had been married for many years to their second wives. Neither candidate had a reputation as a serial adulterer.

To use a metaphor popular in the Bible Belt regions that a conservative must do well in, Newt is a dog that won't hunt.

He has been portrayed for years in the mainstream media as a despicable human being, an ethically challenged political hustler who told his wife as she lay on a hospital bed recovering from cancer he was divorcing her. He gained a reputation as a world-class hypocrite by leading the impeachment of President Bill Clinton essentially for being an adulterous philander while conducting his own adulterous affair.

Conservative voters' disgust over his personal life may well doom Gingrich's run for the Republican nomination.
