It?s not long, however, before the novelty fades and you get a real sense of how the genius design of the Vita has been leveraged to give you a full-blown console-style game. You have fewer physical buttons to manipulate on the handheld than you would on a PlayStation 3 controller, but a lot more flexibility thanks to the touch interface.
It?s not terribly convenient to tap the little fist icon that appears on the screen when a button press can perform the same act, but functions like weapon reloading, machete use, treasure collection and Drake?s camera are smartly mapped to the left and right fringes of the touchscreen. You extend a finger slightly and suddenly you?ve suddenly got another set of secondary controls to work with.
Weapon aiming gets a boost too, thanks to some clever implementation of the Vita?s built-in gyroscope. You?ll still hold down the left trigger to aim down a weapon?s sights and adjust that aim with the right analog stick. The twist is that you can also manipulate the Vita itself, tilting it forward/backward and left/right, to fine-tune your aim. The ideal control scheme involves mixing the two, using the analog stick to get your crosshairs close to your target and the motion controls to line up a headshot.
Then there are the puzzles. Uncharted has always had a focus on puzzle-solving, but the Vita?s touchscreen controls offer some of the series? best yet, no question. You?ll assemble torn pieces of paper together to re-create documents, take rubbings off of rock carvings, move statues around? all sorts of things. You?ll also use the Vita to steer yourself along during a few on-rails sequences, such as a mud slide that was showcase in early demos.
It all works great in Golden Abyss, and it?s not long before the implications of what control tweaks like these might bring to other console-style games on the platform begin to seep in.

Don?t assume that the lack of set piece moments means things come up short in the presentation department, however. Golden Abyss is easily one of the best looking launch titles for the Vita. Those who go looking for flaws will certainly find them; Drake?s movements aren?t as elaborately animated and the character textures and environments overall lack the details of the PS3 games. It still looks stunning on the Vita?s five-inch OLED screen, however. Anyone who complains about the graphics in Golden Abyss is merely looking for things to complain about.
You?re also going to get the same quality of storytelling that fans have come to expect from the series. The actual A to B narrative is great fun thanks to Drake?s snarky chemistry with Golden Abyss love interest Marisa Chase. His exchanges with the ex-con Dante are similarly entertaining. By the time a special guest puts in an admittedly awesome appearance toward the end of the game, you?ll be so invested that the noteworthy moment will be mere gravy on top of yet another compelling Uncharted adventure.
The biggest flaw is the same one that???s been dogging the series since its inception: the shooting is crap. Developer Bend Studios is the first Naughty Dog outsider to take on the Uncharted franchise. Rather than trying to improve on the flaws of the console games, Bend seems content to simply ape the central elements of the core series, for better and for worse. The motion-controlled aiming elements certainly help, but Drake???s inability to shoot straight continues to be a sticking point in Golden Abyss.

It is very rare that reviewers go home hungry after dining out for the purposes of these columns ? but I did just that last Saturday and had to make myself cheese on toast for supper.
What is even more annoying is that my partner certainly did not go hungry with his food choices and could barely contain his smugness.
Let?s start at the beginning at The Boyne Arms in Burwarton, between Bridgnorth and Ludlow.
I called rather late to check if there was a table available and was told they were very busy but if we got there soon after 6pm we would be all right. That was fine and we set off across country from the Corvedale.
We had a table in the lounge bar, and to be fair it is really a dining room, with all tables used for food that night.
I spotted a venison and Shropshire ale pie with blue cheese crust (?9.95) and immediately chose this for my main course. I deferred on a starter as I expected such a dish to be hearty and did not want to leave food on my plate. How wrong I was.
Neil had seared scallops with pea puree and black pudding (?7.75) to start, a dish that was perfect in every way. The scallops had just been shown the pan, the black pudding was a good consistency and the pea puree was fresh and just a little bit crunchy. He was smiling a lot already.
Next he had the local rib-eye steak (?14.25). It was requested as medium and it was just so ? a little pink in the middle and so tender that he scarcely needed a knife to cut it. It was served with home-cooked chips, peas, crisp onion rings, juicy tomato and mushrooms that actually tasted of fungi and not the bland imposters so often passed off as the real thing.
Meanwhile I took one look at my dish and did a double take. It appeared to have been thrown on to the plate with some cabbage and root mash with little care or thought in presentation, unlike the other two dishes ordered. I know dishes don?t have to be artworks on a plate but this one was a little too Jackson Pollock for me.

The ?crust? was so crusty it was burned black and if it had ever seen blue cheese it must have been many years ago. I cut into it to see if anything could be salvaged but sadly no. The venison was tough and I couldn?t even tell if it was meat from a deer. At this point I asked Neil to have a taste to see if I was being too critical because of the dish?s appearance, but no he said he would not have eaten it and continued tucking into his steak.
I like my vegetables al dente but the cabbage was almost raw. A plus point was that the mash was delicious.
Shortly after the dishes arrived the waitress asked if everything was OK. I pointed at the ?crust? and she shook her head and disappeared. I had no chance to mention the other problems. Neil continued to enjoy his meal and the waitress did not come back. Other diners around me were also enjoying their meals and I was miffed.
An almost full plate was taken from the table and nothing was said. Well the waitress knew we weren?t going to be charged but I didn?t and my dismay grew.
When Neil suggested a pudding I gave him a filthy look and said no!
When paying at the bar Neil spotted our drinks had not been added to the bill or my main course and pointed it out. Mistake with the drinks, he was told, and they were added on, while the waitress said chef had told him not to charge for my main course.
Why didn?t someone tell me that at the table and offer to put something together quickly while I watched Neil eat? Not charging was the right thing but not following through was very lacking. Maybe it was lack of training for staff, I don?t know.
It was very bad luck that I got what appeared to be the only duff meal of the evening, it was redeemable but sadly that was not followed through.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Bill Hinzman, who was cast on-the-spot as a zombie in 1968 cult film "Night of the Living Dead" in a role that earned him the longlasting admiration of horror fans, has died at age 75, his daughter said.
Hinzman died of cancer on Sunday evening at his home in Darlington, Pennsylvania, his daughter Heidi Hinzman told Reuters.
He played a prominent role in Director George Romero's low-budget, black-and-white 1968 film "Night of the Living Dead," which is credited with revolutionizing the zombie genre.
Hinzman was working as an assistant cameraman on the film when Romero decided to cast him as the zombie in the movie's opening sequence.
"We'd like to tell the story that it was a hard audition session, but Bill was there and old enough and thin enough and he had an old suit," said the film's producer Russ Streiner.
Dressed in that suit, Hinzman appears at a Pennsylvania cemetery and attacks a pair of young siblings by knocking the man's head against a tombstone and chasing the woman.
He lurches across an open field and eventually chases the woman into a farmhouse.
Fans called Heinzman "No. 1 zombie," said Streiner, who also played a character named Johnny who fought with Hinzman in the cemetery.
"He was a very popular guy, he was very accessible to the fans," Streiner added.
Hinzman also went on to direct and star in the 1980s horror movies "The Majorettes" and "FleshEater."
He will be cremated, as he had asked, said Heidi Hinzman.
"He always joked with me that if he got buried he would come back," she said.

ROME (Reuters) ? Italian authorities have ended the search for bodies in the submerged sections of the capsized Costa Concordia, more than two weeks after the giant cruise liner capsized off the Tuscan coast, officials said on Tuesday.
The civil protection authority said conditions on the wreck had made it impossible for divers to continue working safely in the underwater sections of the 290-metre long vessel.
The decision had been finalized after the families of the 15 people still unaccounted for had been informed.
A total of 17 bodies have been recovered since the accident on January 13 in which the Concordia, carrying more than 4,200 passengers and crew, was holed by a rock after its captain steered to within 150 meters of the tiny island of Giglio.
The chief executive of the ship's owner Costa Cruises told an Italian Senate committee Tuesday that all safety systems on board had been in order at the time of the accident but there had potentially been delays leading up to evacuation.
"We know there is a sequence of orders that has to be given before the evacuation. Some of these orders were given, but we are not certain of the timing or who gave them," CEO Pierluigi Foschi said.
"Possibly the period of time between one order and the next was too long," he added.
The ship's captain, Francesco Schettino, is under house arrest and is blamed for causing the accident. He is also accused of abandoning ship before the evacuation was complete.
Passengers have complained the evacuation was chaotic, with some left waiting in lifeboats for two hours before being able to leave the ship. Several bodies were found by divers in submerged evacuation assembly points, wearing life vests.
Italy's top-ranking Coast Guard official, Marco Brusco, said last week that Schettino lost "a precious hour" which made evacuating the ship more difficult.
Costa Cruises has offered 11,000 euros in compensation to each of the passengers aboard the liner, in a bid to limit the legal fallout of the accident.
Searching is set to continue in other sections of the half-submerged ship and in waters up to 18 square kilometers around the vessel, where a number of objects have been spotted which investigators believe could turn out to be bodies.
Salvage crews plan to begin pumping more than 2,300 tonnes of diesel from the wreck this week but bad weather has delayed the start of operations expected to take between three weeks and a month.
Foschi said that Costa Cruises, a unit of Carnival Corp, remained a strong company despite the disaster.
"The firm is financially strong, it's structured to be strong. My concern now is how we can recover our image and the confidence of customers in Italy and the world," he said.

It's amazing how things get taken out of context especially in the "lamestream media." Allegedly, Newt Gingrich allegedly said that "Spanish is a language of the ghetto." You see, what people don't know about Newt is that Newt has been a longtime admirer of the work of the Argentine writer, Jorge Luis Borges and one of his most favorite short stories of the maestro is "Borges y yo" or "Borges and I." Yes, he's been quiet about that, but if one goes back to his Tulane days and has access to the library books he checked out during his tenure there one would find evidence that, in fact, Newt was a closet Borgesian.
Now, the Borges story explores the basic notion of the self and begins: "The other one, the one called Borges, is the one things happen to. I walk through the streets of Buenos Aires and stop for a moment, perhaps mechanically now, to look at the arch of an entrance hall and the grillwork on the gate; I know of Borges from the mail and see his name on a list of professors or in a biographical dictionary. I like hourglasses, maps, eighteenth-century typography, the taste of coffee and the prose of Stevenson; he shares these preferences, but in a vain way that turns them into the attributes of an actor."
You see, just as there are two Borgeses, there are two Newts (this latter newt should not be confused with the newt one reads in a Julio Cort?zar short story, "Axolotl" which is an entirely different newt, but not necessarily a different newt). We all see the public Newt, the Newt that insulted Ronald Reagan, the Newt who was fined for his unethical congressional behavior, the Newt that's a Washington insider, the Newt who asked his second wife for an open marriage with his third, the Newt who took money from Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac ad astra.
But that's only Newt, there's also the Newt that is known by itself, the one that questions things about the public self, the one that weeps over the death of his mother. So, you see the Newt that called Spanish "the language of the ghetto" was not said by Newt, but by Newt. The Newt who said those things is not the Newt who knows that the Spanish of Cervantes is not the Spanish of the ghetto or the Spanish of Neruda is not the Spanish of the ghetto or the Spanish of Borges is not the Spanish of the ghetto. The Newt who knows those things admires Latinos and feels compassion for whatever plights they may have to deal with. Likewise, the Newt that rails against Saul Alinsky as being a Jewish socialist or about Obama as being a Kenyan socialist, is quite candidly anti-Semitic and racist, but the other Newt is not. That's the Newt who loves Israel and takes Shedon Adelson's Jewish contributions to support his race to the White House or the Newt who wrote so lovingly about education in the Belgian Congo.
No, just as Borges was also Borges, Newt is also Newt and one only needs to read that chapter of his PhD dissertation titled, "Pierre Mentiroso, Author of the Quixote" to get a true understanding of who Newt actually is. Happy reading.
