Free press euphoria fading fast in South Sudan (Reuters)

JUBA (Reuters) ? Dengdit Ayok's dream of a free press in Africa's newest nation dissolved when he was arrested and beaten up after writing about the wedding of South Sudanese President Salva Kiir's daughter.

In an article published in October entitled "Let me say so," the reporter criticized Kiir for allowing his daughter to marry an Ethiopian, calling it a shock to the nation.

"Security forces came to our office to detain my editor and then me. I was beaten upon arrival (in prison) and held for two weeks without charge," Dengdit said, sitting in his small office on the outskirts of the capital Juba.

Since then, authorities have suspended his new English-language newspaper Destiny, without giving any indication of when it might be allowed to reopen.

"Journalism is a profession that gives sleepless nights because you can expect arbitrary arrest at any time," Michael Koma, editor-in-chief of the independent Juba Post, wrote in a Christmas column entitled "Still long trek to freedom."

South Sudan became independent last July under a 2005 peace deal and 2011 referendum that aimed to resolve the civil war that started in 1983 by splitting Sudan into two.

Journalists had hoped independence would bring an end to the publishing curbs, closures and arbitrary imprisonment imposed by the northern government in Khartoum. Sudan is considered one of the worst places in the world to be a journalist, ranked 170 out of 179 in the 2011 global press freedom index.

Early signals from Juba have not been good, however.

"Unfortunately there are worrying signs of restrictions and arbitrary arrests," said Tom Rhodes, East Africa consultant at the Committee to Protect Journalists. "It is sad that the government denies there is a problem."

Reporters say there is no clear mechanism for censorship or monitoring but the very lack of a media law allows security forces to make summary arrests on behalf of ministers upset by an article.

Many of the former guerillas who make up much of Salva Kiir's cabinet harbor a mistrust of independent media.

"Some arrests are made because of emotional acts of the leaders. They have no legal grounds. What they normally do is throw you (in jail) to assuage their anger, then you are released. No court, nothing," said Nhial Bol, editor-in-chief of The Citizen, another independent daily in Juba.

"Corruption is inherited. Most of our leaders are used to impunity," he said. "Being a commander, nobody checks you."

MEDIA BILL IN THE WORKS

South Sudan's fledgling government has found it hard going trying to set up state bodies and make laws in one of the most underdeveloped and conflict-ridden countries in the world.

Thousands have been killed by rebel and tribal violence, the new nation has few roads outside Juba and the economy relies entirely on oil revenues, currently non-existent as the country shuts down oil output until it can resolve with Khartoum how to disentangle its industries, borders and debt.

A media bill has been in the works for years but is still pending final government ratification.

"There is no legal clarity for journalists. Authorities still use the northern security laws," said Dengdit.

Aside from security harassment, the media face other daunting practical problems. Most regions are inaccessible by road and telecommunications are sparse. Newspapers reach the rest of the country by plane from Juba, sometimes a day or two late.

The Citizen is located in a warehouse complex housing the country's only printing press. Bol's small office is a far cry from spacious government offices brimming with laptops and new air-conditioning units.

Most independent newspapers have circulation of only a few thousand copies, tiny staff and little advertising. Some papers have even had to get printed in Khartoum as The Citizen's printer is facing technical problems.

The new newspapers -- which include Destiny's Arabic sister Al-Masir and the rival Mustaqbal (Future) -- are determined to struggle on. They are at least able to tackle subjects long banned by Khartoum such as government neglect of the Darfur region, scene of an almost decade-long insurgency during which 300,000 people have been killed, according to U.N. figures.

It is when reporters try to address problems closer to home, such as official corruption, that they encounter silence and sometimes intimidation.

Government spokesman Barnaba Marial Benjamin said the justice ministry was working on a media bill to guarantee press freedom.

"There is absolute freedom of the press - no restrictions," he said, adding that Destiny would be able to resume work once it had submitted the necessary papers required of newspapers.

But Bol said the situation would not be improved until the security forces understood the role of the media in a democratic society.

"We have stopped allowing our reporters to move around with cameras because of the security people," he said. "We stopped going to other sensitive places like the president's office unless they have called us."

While Destiny remains closed, Dengdit is writing for al-Masir, located in the same rundown building.

The battle for press freedom has just begun, he said.

"We demand from the government the necessary rights to do our job," he said.

Arsenal advances in FA Cup

updated 8:27 p.m. ET Jan. 29, 2012

LONDON - Arsenal kept its bid to end a seven-year trophy drought on track Sunday, scoring three times in eight second-half minutes to beat Aston Villa 3-2 and reach the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Villa led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Richard Dunne and Darren Bent, prompting near silence from Arsenal fans still waiting for a trophy to follow the 2005 FA Cup.

The home side got back in the game with Robin van Persie's 54th-minute penalty, tied it on Theo Walcott's lucky rebound and took the lead in the 61st on a second spot kick from Van Persie.

Middlesbrough and Sunderland will replay on Feb. 7 for the right to face Arsenal after drawing their fourth-round match 1-1.

Having avoided a fourth straight defeat, the Gunners are now just three games away from a Wembley final.

"We tried to keep focused and calm," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "It is an opportunity but you could see today how hard the games are."

Arsenal great Thierry Henry missed a late chance after coming on in the 89th for the third appearance of his loan from the New York Red Bulls of MLS, but home fans could still cheer the result.

Robbie Keane, on-loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy, provided the cross that led to Dunne's 33rd-minute opener.

Second-tier Middlesbrough led against its local rival when Barry Robson capitalized on some weak defending to smash a 16th-minute volley across goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and in at the far post.

Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill introduced striker Fraizer Campbell at halftime for his first appearance since August 2010, and the former Manchester United trainee stroked in a low shot 14 minutes later following a mistake by Robson.

Campbell had not played for the first team for 500 days because of knee injuries.

Crawley Town, the lowest-ranked side left in this season's FA Cup, was handed a meeting with Premier League club Stoke in Sunday's fifth-round draw.

Liverpool will meet Brighton, Chelsea will host Birmingham, Norwich will host Leicester, Everton will play Blackpool or Sheffield Wednesday, and Bolton will go to the winner of the replay between Millwall and Southampton. Tottenham is at Stevenage.

___

LISBON, Portugal (AP) ? American defender Oguchi Onyewu scored on headers in the 18th and 27th minutes, giving Sporting Lisbon a 2-0 win over Beira Mar in the Portuguese league.

Onyewu received a yellow card in the first minute, then got goals off a corner kick and a free kick from the right flank, both from around the top of the 6-yard box.

He has five goals this season, including four in the league.

___

ROME (AP) ? Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored one goal and set up another as AC Milan beat Cagliari 3-0 to move back within one point of first-place Juventus in the Italian league.

Ibrahimovic scored his league-leading 15th goal with a free kick in the 32nd minute, then controlled a ball with his chest to set up Antonio Nocerino's goal in the 39th. Milan captain Massimo Ambrosini scored with his first goal of the season in the 75th.

Inter Milan's league winning streak ended at seven, one short of the club record, with a 1-0 loss at Lecce. Guillermo Giacomazzi scored off a pass from Massimo Oddo in the 40th minute, Inter had two goals called back for offside. Lazio jumped ahead of the Nerazzurri into fourth place.

It was Lecce's first home win of the season and only its fourth overall.

Lazio won 3-0 at Chievo Verona with a first-half goal from Hernanes and two in the final minutes from Miroslav Klose.

Elsewhere, Roma drew 1-1 at home with Bologna to stay sixth. Roma's 21-year-old midfielder Miralem Pjanic equalized with a free kick in the 62nd minute after Bologna captain Marco Di Vaio had scored six minutes earlier.

Also, Genoa beat Napoli 3-2 with two goals from Rodrigo Palacio and one from newly signed Alberto Gilardino to get some revenge for a 6-1 loss to Napoli last month that cost Alberto Malesani his job.

___

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? David Zurutuza lasted only five minutes, but it was long enough to score a double in Real Sociedad's 5-1 rout of visiting Sporting Gijon in the Spanish league.

The 25-year-old midfielder volleyed Antoine Griezmann's cross into the left corner for Sociedad's second-minute opener, and a minute later he scored with another shot from the right side of the area after Carlos Vela had played him clear.

But Zurutuza's dream start took an ugly turn in the fifth minute when he and Sporting defender Gregory Arnolin collided face-to-face while disputing a loose ball.

Granada coach Abel Resino got off to a winning start as his team moved out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win at Real Betis, while Getafe dealt Levante its second home loss of the season with a 2-1 win.

Malaga beat Sevilla 2-1 in an Andalusian derby 2-1 to break a six-game winless run, while third-place Valencia was held to a 2-2 draw at Racing Santander. Atletico Madrid visits Osasuna on Monday.

On Saturday, Real Madrid opened a seven-point lead with a 3-1 win over last-place Zaragoza as Barcelona tied 0-0 at Villarreal.

___

BERLIN (AP) ? Marco Reus led Borussia Moenchengladbach to a 3-0 win at Stuttgart on Sunday to keep his team within a point of the Bundesliga's top three.

Reus sent in a dangerous free kick for Mike Hanke to score with a glancing header in the 31st minute, and then scored himself in the 81st. Igor de Camargo added another three minutes later.

Moenchengladbach remains a point behind league leader Bayern Munich, defending champion Borussia Dortmund and Schalke, who all have 40 points.

Moenchengladbach's first win over Stuttgart since 2005 sent the home team to its fourth league loss in a row.

Earlier Sunday, Mainz scored three goals in the first 17 minutes to beat Freiburg 3-1.

___

PARIS (AP) ? Marseille won its seventh straight game, defeating Rennes 2-1 in the French league as Benoit Cheyrou scored the go-ahead goal from the edge of the penalty area in the 77th minute.

Rennes midfielder Tongo Hamed Doumbia opened the scoring with a 30-yard shot in the 15th, but fifth-place Marseille equalized with an own goal from defender Onyekachi Apam just before halftime.

Ajaccio moved out of the French league's relegation zone by defeating Valenciennes 2-1, its fourth straight victory.

The visitors were down to 10 men in the 73rd when midfielder Paul Lasne was sent off for a second yellow card, but substitute Christian Kinkela scored the winner in stoppage time by curling a shot into the top corner.

Also Sunday, Bordeaux goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso fouled Yannick Sagbo but saved the subsequent penalty to salvage a 0-0 draw against Evian.

___

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) ? Celtic reached the final of Scotland's League Cup for the 29th time with a 3-1 win over Falkirk.

The teams were tied 1-1 until the 56th minute after 17-year-old Falkirk midfielder Jay Fulton equalized Celtic captain Scott Brown's penalty.

Striker Anthony Stokes put Celtic back in front with a 25-yard free kick and tapped Gary Hooper's pass in the 86th to settle the match.

Celtic will meet Kilmarnock in the final at Hampden Park on March 18. Celtic's 14 tournament wins is second only to Rangers' 27.

___

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? Luuk de Jong scored three goals as FC Twente beat FC Groningen 4-1 and moved into second place in the Dutch league.

De Jong headed Twente into the lead in the 14th, converted another cross from Ola John in the 23rd and completed his hat trick in the 58th with another header ? again set up by John.

De Jong then provided the cross headed in by midfielder Leroy Fer in the 66th.

Twente has 39 points, two behind new leader PSV Eindhoven, which beat Vitesse Arnhem 3-1 Friday. AZ Alkmaar lost 2-0 at Roda JC to drop to third.

John Guidetti also got a hat trick to guide Feyenoord to a 4-2 win over Ajax.

93% Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

Superbly directed action from the first minute to the last! Even if I still hold the original as my favourite in the series, the sensational stunts of this film is definitely one for the record books. The jaw-dropping sequence at the Burj Khalifa hotel - a rush of adrenaline that exhilarates to the extreme - comes especially to mind. Cast-wise, it's quite the pleasure as well. British funnyman Simon Pegg provides some nice comic relief (although corny such at times), while Paula Patton and Jeremy Renner bring out their absolute A-game. And for me as a Swede, it was an incredible, if somewhat surreal joy to see Michael Nyqvist as the villain. Just a few years ago, I would have never guessed him to take the leap over to Hollywood, but I'm sure glad that he did. Especially as he's one of the finest actors that our country has to present. As for the film's front figure, I can say only this: no longer may I have any respect for Tom Cruise the person (he's still a Scientologist after all), but he certainly hasn't faded one bit as a dare-devil action star. So what it boils down to here is one of the true must-see popcorn movies of 2011. Kudos to director Brad Bird, for making the impossible possible, and granting us an invite to a sequel that breathes new life into the franchise. He really pulled out all the stops on this one, delivering a fun and energizing, balls-to-the-wall action-fest. If it doesn't raise your pulse, you are either dead or made of stone. Because as far as spy thrillers go, this is one of the coolest ever conceived.

Is Obama the Rhetorical Rip-Off Artist Really a Republican? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama in his State of the Union address proved himself to be a Republican rhetoric rip-off artist. Obama stole key components of Jon Huntsman's stump speech and recycled one of Rick Perry's key phrases. As if stealing from drop-out candidates wasn't enough, he borrowed from Newt Gingrich, too.

In 2008, when Obama praised Ronald Reagan and the Republicans for having better ideas than Democrats, he was attacked by rivals Hillary Clinton and John Edwards, according to the Associated Press. Obama's borrowing may be emblematic that Obama, elected as a center-left progressive who tacked right after his inauguration, has morphed into a center-right pragmatist who is relatively indistinguishable from his Republican opponents.

Obama talked about "an economy built on American manufacturing," evoking what the Boston Globe called the "central tenet of (Huntsman's) economic platform." He also borrowed the climax of Huntsman's stump speech, his identification of a "Trust Deficit" in America.

The Bangor Daily News reported Huntsman took a hard-line against big banks. He proposed taxing them to raise revenue, according to Time. Channeling his inner-Huntsman, the candidate The Australian claimed Obama most feared, the president vowed to levy a fee on banks as it "will give banks that were rescued by taxpayers a chance to repay a deficit of trust."

Later, Obama said, "I've talked tonight about the deficit of trust between Main Street and Wall Street. But the divide between this city and the rest of the country is at least as bad -- and it seems to get worse every year."

Obama also adopted Huntsman's "nation building here at home" theme. Talking about the military and increasing the V.A.'s budget, Obama said, "it means enlisting our veterans in the work of rebuilding our nation."

He purloined Rick Perry's "all-of-the-above energy policy" phrase Perry used in official speeches, according to his official site, and during his presidential campaign. According to Time, Obama also stole the title of Newt Gingrich's book, "Winning the Future" when he told Congress, "Don't let other countries win the race for the future." The Atlantic reports Obama used the phrase 11 times.

Hearing Obama steal Huntsman's "Trust Deficit" theme was jarring. Obama may just be a hustler on the make, a political magpie ready to steal whatever is shiny. But it may be symptomatic of a deeper existential problem: Barack Obama doesn't know who he is.

Mary-Pat Hector: Teen Impact: Finalist #6

This blog post was submitted as an entry in the Teen Impact contest and awarded as a finalist.

As founder of a national organization, I understand that only 10 percent will lead the 90 percent of my generation. I know I am in that 10 percent, so I created a national campaign, Shake Off Violence, beginning with a 90-day ceasefire. The purpose of the campaign is to raise public awareness about youth violence and to promote peace.

With a 40 percent rise in gang membership and a surge in gun violence, I just got tired of seeing my peers die. So I created a campaign to bring together leaders in the anti-violence community, music industry and political arena for a series of events and activities to promote peace among youth.

Participating cities include: Huntsville and Montgomery, AL; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta and Augusta, GA; St. Louis, MO; Jacksonville, NC; Philadelphia, PA; Detroit, MI; Bronx, Harlem, Long Island, and New York, NY; Milwaukee, WI.

The goal of this campaign is to save lives by bringing attention to the simple fact that WE HAVE TO GET THESE GUNS OFF OUR STREETS. We need new gun laws that will protect our future.

How can you get involved? Starting November 11, 2011, do not watch or listen to violent music or shows. Do not participate in physical or verbal violence. No thinking violent thoughts, either. We need people talking about this at your job, on your college campuses, and in your homes. We will have workshops, PSAs and forums created by youth to save our generation, so please visit my website, Marypathector.webs.com.

I believe all things are possible if we try. I hope you will join us as we take a stand against violence.

#ShakeOffViolence

I could go for the guitarist of Next Oktober, but I have a question. Would you classify them as metal? I'm not familiar with either of the bands used as examples.

Also, would it be okay to have a two lead-guitarist setup switching off on leads?

I would consider them metal, I suppose. What bands are you familiar with so that I might explain it better?

Different people have different views on what is metal.

Well, I listen to anything from Mot?rhead and Judas Priest to Megadeth and Slayer, Nile and Death, Suffocation, Carcass. Basically all kinds of metal, heavy metal, thrash metal, death metal, deathgrind, grindcore, so on, besides metalcore and nu metal :v

User avatar

o.o Oh my. xD Well, they aren't really metal like that, I don't think. I've listened to some Slayer and Megadeth before and from what I've seen...they aren't really the same thing.

I dunno. I'd really like to get in on this (there are WAY too few band RPs on this site and I just love band RPs) and I can provide a very detailed and (I like to think, lest I come off as a pompous douche) deep character, but I kinda loathe metalcore and nu metal so I couldn't possibly take part in a band RP where the band is either of those XD

Samsung 2011 Q4 earnings official: $42 billion in sales, $4.7 billion operating profit

It might not be making as much money as the competition in Cupertino, but that doesn't mean Samsung isn't raking in cash at an astonishing clip. We reported earnings estimates a few weeks ago, but now it's official that the firm posted a 5.3 trillion won ($4.7 billion) operating profit in Q4 2011. That represents over a 2 trillion won ($1.8 billion) increase year over year. In all, it pulled in 47.3 trillion won ($42 billion) in sales, thanks in no small part to the over 300 million phones Sammy sold last year. While mobile accounted for roughly 40 percent of company sales and half of its operating profit (2.6 trillion won, or $2.3 billion), its semiconductor business did almost as well, raking in 2.3 trillion won ($2 billion) in profit over the same period. Samsung's Display Panel business outperformed 2010 -- buoyed by strong sales in LED televisions -- as sales were up almost 20 percent, to 8.55 trillion won ($7.6 billion).

Well the call just finished up, and Sammy provided some prognosication for 2012. It anticipates the mobile business to continue to grow, with LTE and and new market segments (read: Galaxy Note) helping drive sales. TV sales are also expected to remain on the uptick, as Samsung anticipates demand to continue growing due in part to the London Olympics and roll-out of more Smart TVs. Feel free to check out all the numbers giving Samsung reason for its optimism at the source link below.

It seems not everybody is a fan of Rihanna ‘s “Tupac” tattoo, which she got inked at Mark Mahoney’s Shamrock Social Club in Hollywood earlier this week. Hi there, just came across this and it sounds like it'd be a lot of fun, though I'd thought I'd check on the OOC first.

Would you say a wererat would come under stereotypical high fantasy monsters? Ive seen them a few times in fantasy settings, but they're a bit underrepresented. I have a wererat character that I'd rather like to develop if they'd suit the setting.

@Vitaminheart Yes wererats are fine, though, if you are the first lycanthrope to apply you would need to cover the basics of lycanthropy as well. Likewise if someone playing a werewolf beat you to the punch you would have to abide by the rules for lycanthropy created by them.

@Zerotolerance Thanks, dude. I am crossing my fingers. This is my third try on this site so perhaps it will be the charm.

I would be fine with that. I have a rough therianthropy mythos in mind anyway, so it shouldn't to be too tough, thanks.

If you would allow, I'd love to write up a gnoll character.

@Vio Gnolls are classic and therefore fine. There are really only two types of monsters I'd refuse, one are the random fellows like weresheep, animate furniture, and carnivorous broccoli. The other are out of genre creatures like tanuki, chupacabra and xenomorphs.

@Vitamin Sounds good and don't assume from my use of the word 'lycanthropy' that it has to be a disease. They need to be shapeshifters, of course, because that's at the core of the mythos, but how you explain the shapeshifting whether curse, disease, inherited gift or animal soul, is your call.

No. 11 Rutgers women beat No. 23 DePaul 65-64 (AP)

PISCATAWAY, N.J. ? Khadijah Rushdan has been saving her best work for the end of games lately.

The senior guard made virtually every play down the stretch for No. 11 Rutgers in its 65-64 victory over 23rd-ranked DePaul on Tuesday night.

She scored the final 11 points for the Scarlet Knights, including a lay-up with 1.5 seconds left that completed a 16-point comeback in the final 10 minutes of the game. After hitting her lay-in, she wasn't finished, sprinting to the other end of the court and denying the Blue Demons any last chance of pulling out the victory by blocking a shot 40 feet from the basket.

"Khadijah's a winner," Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer said. "You see someone who is caged up, when she thinks she's going to lose. She does whatever she needs to do."

Rushdan has been turning up her play lately at the end of games. She's averaging nearly eight points in the final 5 minutes of the Scarlet Knights' last three contests. She almost rallied them from a late nine-point deficit in a loss to St. John's, scoring eight points and having an assist in the final 2 1/2 minutes of that game. That was the team's only blemish in its past nine games.

"I just hate to lose," said Rushdan, who had 16 of her 24 points in the second half.

It was the second time in her career that Rushdan hit a game-winner to lift Rutgers. She hit a pull-up jumper to beat Princeton last season.

Trailing 56-40 midway through the second half, Rutgers (17-3, 6-1 Big East) rallied behind its defense as the Scarlet Knights held DePaul without a field goal over the next 5 1/2 minutes. That helped them go on a 21-8 run to close within 62-61 on Rushdan's layup with 1:49 left. She then blocked a layup by Anna Martin, giving Rutgers a chance to take the lead.

Both teams got sloppy over the next minute, combining for three turnovers.

Rutgers fouled Martin, who converted both free throws to make it a three-point game with 30 seconds left.

After two more turnovers, Rutgers had a chance to tie it, but April Sykes' 3-pointer was off the rim. Rushdan was there to convert the rebound with 12 seconds left to make it 64-63. DePaul inbounded the ball and the Scarlet Knights fouled Deanna Ortiz with 8 seconds left. She missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Rushdan got the ball at midcourt and drove to the basket for the game-winner, hitting the shot over Ortiz.

"I was just trying to get a shot up," said Rushdan. "It's nice I was able to come through for my team. Whether I hit it or someone else hit it, we won that's what matters."

The Scarlet Knights began a rough conference stretch. They visit No. 20 Georgetown before hosting second-ranked Notre Dame and traveling to No. 3 Connecticut.

"We come out the way we came out the last couple of games and we're going to get blown out," Rushdan said. "It needs to start in practice. We need to push each other. We can't think we can show up for games. "

DePaul (15-6, 3-4) was coming off a 44-point loss to No. 3 UConn on Saturday. Martin, the Blue Demons' leading scorer, was held without a point in that game. The junior guard, who was averaging 18.3 points, got going early against Rutgers. She had 12 points in the first half including six straight at one point as the Blue Demons built a four-point lead.

"Any time you lose it's really hard," said Martin, who finished with 26 points. "Saturday was more of an embarrassment I think. Today I feel like the game was ours; we didn't finish it."

Rutgers rallied in the first half behind freshman Syessence Davis, who had seven points during a 14-4 run that gave the Scarlet Knights a 28-23 lead. The game was tied at 32 at halftime. Davis finished with a career-high nine points.

DePaul opened the second half with a 20-6 run to take a 50-36 lead on Brittany Hrynko's 3-pointer. Martin hit two 3s during the burst as the Blue Demons capped the run with four straight 3s. Then they went into their offensive funk and faltered down the stretch.

"This was a tough game to lose," DePaul coach Doug Bruno said. "These players are great young women and deserve to win, but you got to finish it. We deserved this one, but gave it away."

Usually Bruno loves an uptempo game, but the Blue Demons have been decimated by injuries this season. They have lost Keisha Hampton (right knee); Taylor Pikes (ACL); freshmen Alexa Gallagher (right knee) and Chanise Jenkins (left ankle) for the season, leaving the team with eight healthy players.

Former Scarlet Knights star Cappie Pondexter was at the game and received an ovation. Pondexter, who graduated from Rutgers in 2006, spent the first part of the WNBA offseason playing for a team in Russia. The New York Liberty All-Star just signed a contract with a team in Turkey for the rest of the winter and will soon be headed back overseas.

Marine sergeant faces sentencing in Iraq killings (Reuters)

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif (Reuters) ? The U.S. Marine sergeant accused of leading a 2005 massacre of 24 Iraqi civilians in Haditha returned to a military court at Camp Pendleton near San Diego on Tuesday to face sentencing for his guilty plea to one count of dereliction of duty.

Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich, 31, entered his plea on Monday as part of a deal with military prosecutors in which more serious charges of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault were dismissed.

The guilty plea cut short Wuterich's court-martial, ending the final prosecution of alleged atrocities that sparked public outrage and brought international condemnation of U.S. troops.

As part of his guilty plea, Wuterich accepted responsibility for providing negligent verbal instructions to the Marines under his command when he told them to "shoot first and ask questions later," which resulted in the death of innocent civilians.

He faces a maximum sentence of three months of confinement, forfeiture of two-thirds of his pay for three months and a reduction in rank when he is sentenced on Tuesday, a Camp Pendleton spokesman said.

Any discharge process Wuterich may face will be separate from the plea and sentencing.

Appearing in court on Tuesday, Wuterich, wearing his military uniform, sat stoically, hands folded and elbows resting on the table, and calmly listened. His lawyer, Neal Puckett, questioned one of several character witnesses expected to be called before sentencing is imposed.

Wuterich was accused of being the ringleader in a series of November 19, 2005, shootings and grenade attacks that left two dozen civilians dead in Haditha, a city west of Baghdad that was then a hotbed of insurgent activity.

The killings were portrayed by Iraqi witnesses as a massacre of unarmed civilians -- men, women and children -- carried out by Marines in anger after a member of their unit was killed by a roadside bomb.

Lawyers for the troops involved argued the deaths resulted from a fast-moving situation in which the Marines believed they were under enemy fire. Wuterich was originally charged with murder in the case.

Six out of the eight Marines originally accused in the case had their charges dismissed by military judges, and a seventh was cleared of criminal wrongdoing.

Wuterich enlisted in the Marines after his 1998 graduation from high school, where he was an athletic honor-roll student and played with the marching band.

He was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq when the Haditha incident occurred.

Iran slams EU oil embargo, warns could hit U.S. (Reuters)

TEHRAN/BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Iran accused Europeans on Monday of waging "psychological warfare" after the EU banned imports of Iranian oil, and President Barack Obama said Washington would impose more sanctions to address the "serious threat presented by Iran's nuclear program."

The Islamic Republic, which denies trying to build a nuclear bomb, scoffed at efforts to choke its oil exports, as Asia lines up to buy what Europe scorns.

Some Iranians also renewed threats to stop Arab oil from leaving the Gulf and warned they might strike U.S. targets worldwide if Washington used force to break any Iranian blockade of a strategically vital shipping route.

Yet in three decades of confrontation between Tehran and the West, bellicose rhetoric and the undependable armory of sanctions have become so familiar that the benchmark Brent crude oil price edged only 0.8 percent higher, and some of that was due to unrelated currency factors.

"If any disruption happens regarding the sale of Iranian oil, the Strait of Hormuz will definitely be closed," Mohammad Kossari, deputy head of parliament's foreign affairs and national security committee, told Fars news agency a day after U.S., French and British warships sailed back into the Gulf.

"If America seeks adventures after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran will make the world unsafe for Americans in the shortest possible time," Kossari added, referring to an earlier U.S. pledge to use its fleet to keep the passage open.

In Washington, Obama said in a statement that the EU sanctions underlined the strength of the international community's commitment to "addressing the serious threat presented by Iran's nuclear program."

"The United States will continue to impose new sanctions to increase the pressure on Iran," Obama said.

The United States imposed its own sanctions against Iran's oil trade and central bank on December 31. On Monday it imposed sanctions on the country's third-largest bank, state-owned Bank Tejarat and a Belarus-based affiliate, for allegedly helping Tehran develop its nuclear program.

The EU sanctions were also welcomed by Israel, which has warned it might attack Iran if sanctions do not deflect Tehran from a course that some analysts say could potentially give Iran a nuclear bomb next year.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a statement with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner: "This new, concerted pressure will sharpen the choice for Iran's leaders and increase their cost of defiance of basic international obligations."

U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, reiterated Washington's commitment to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. "I think that Iran has undoubtedly heard that message and would be well advised to heed it," she said at a meeting of the board of governors of the American Jewish Committee in New York.

CALLS FOR TALKS

Germany, France and Britain used the EU sanctions as a cue for a joint call to Tehran to renew long-suspended negotiations on its nuclear program. Russia, like China a powerful critic of the Western approach, said talks might soon be on the cards.

Iran, however, said new sanctions made that less likely. It is a view shared by some in the West who caution that such tactics risk hardening Iranian support for a nuclear program that also seems to be subject to a covert "war" of sabotage and assassinations widely blamed on Israeli and Western agents.

The European Union embargo will not take full effect until July 1 because the foreign ministers who agreed the anticipated ban on imports of Iranian crude at a meeting in Brussels were anxious not to penalize the ailing economies of Greece, Italy and others to whom Iran is a major oil supplier. The strategy will be reviewed in May to see if it should go ahead.

Curbing Iran's oil exports is a double-edged sword, as Tehran's own response to the embargo clearly showed.

Loss of revenue is painful for a clerical establishment that faces an awkward electoral test at a time of galloping inflation which is hurting ordinary people. But since Iran's Western-allied Arab neighbors are struggling to raise their own output to compensate, the curbs on Tehran's exports have driven up oil prices and raised costs for recession-hit Western industries.

A member of Iran's influential Assembly of Experts, former Intelligence Minister Ali Fallahian, said Tehran should respond to the delayed-action EU sanctions by stopping sales to the bloc immediately, denying the Europeans time to arrange alternative supplies and damaging their economies with higher oil prices.

"The best way is to stop exporting oil ourselves before the end of this six months and before the implementation of the plan," the semi-official Fars news agency quoted him as saying.

'PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE'

"European Union sanctions on Iranian oil is psychological warfare," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said. "Imposing economic sanctions is illogical and unfair but will not stop our nation from obtaining its rights."

Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told the official IRNA news agency that the more sanctions were imposed on Tehran "the more obstacles there will be to solve the issue".

Iran's Oil Ministry issued a statement saying the sanctions did not come as a shock. "The oil ministry has from long ago thought about it and has come up with measures to deal with any challenges," it said, according to IRNA.

Mehmanparast said: "The European countries and those who are under American pressure, should think about their own interests. Any country that deprives itself from Iran's energy market, will soon see that it has been replaced by others."

China, Iran's biggest customer, has resisted U.S. pressure to cut back its oil imports, as have other Asian economies to varying degrees. India's oil minister said on Monday sanctions were forcing Iran to sell more cheaply and that India planned to take full advantage of that to buy as much as it could.

The EU measures include an immediate ban on all new contracts to import, purchase or transport Iranian crude and petroleum products. However, EU countries with existing contracts can honor them up to July 1.

EU officials said they also agreed to freeze the assets of Iran's central bank and ban trade in gold and other precious metals with the bank and state bodies.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said: "I want the pressure of these sanctions to result in negotiations."

"I want to see Iran come back to the table and either pick up all the ideas that we left on the table ... last year ... or to come forward with its own ideas."

Iran has said it is willing to hold talks with Western powers, though there have been mixed signals on whether conditions imposed by both sides make new negotiations likely.

IAEA INSPECTORS VISIT

The Islamic Republic says it is enriching uranium only for producing electricity and other civilian uses. The start this month of a potentially bomb-proof - and once secret - enrichment plant has deepened skepticism abroad, however.

The United Nations' nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, confirmed plans for a visit next week by senior inspectors to try to clear up questions raised about the purpose of Iran's nuclear activities. Tehran is banned by international treaty from developing nuclear weaponry.

"The Agency team is going to Iran in a constructive spirit, and we trust that Iran will work with us in that same spirit," IAEA chief Yukiya Amano said in a statement announcing the January 29-31 visit.

Iran, whose regional policies face a setback from the difficulties of its Arab ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has powerful defenders in the form of Russia, which has built Iran a reactor, and China. Both permanent U.N. Security Council members argue that Western sanctions are counter-productive.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, classifying the EU embargo among "aggravating factors", said Moscow believed there was a good chance that talks between six global powers and Iran could resume soon and that Russia would try to steer both Iran and the West away from further confrontation.

His ministry issued an official statement expressing "regret and alarm": "What is happening here is open pressure and diktat, an attempt to 'punish' Iran for its intractable behavior.

"This is a deeply mistaken approach, as we have told our European partners more than once. Under such pressure Iran will not agree to any concessions or any changes in its policy."

But that argument cuts no ice with the U.S. administration, for which Iran - and Israel's stated willingness to consider unilateral military action against it - is a major challenge as Obama campaigns for re-election against Republican opponents who say he has been too soft on Tehran.

"The Artist," "Hugo" lead the way in Oscar nods (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Silent-era throwback film "The Artist" and Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" led the pack of Oscar nominees on Tuesday, including nods in the best film category, in the race for the world's top movie honors.

"Hugo," Scorsese's 3D film exploring the magic of moviemaking, earned the most nominations with 11 overall, including one for him in the director category. "The Artist," which has swept through the awards season this year taking many pre-Oscar honors, had 10 nominations in total.

The two easily outdistanced other top nominees including baseball movie "Moneyball," with six nods, and Steven Spielberg's World War One tale "War Horse," also with six nominations.

Joining those four films in the race for best movie are family drama "The Descendants," civil rights movie "The Help," Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris," Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life," and 9/11 movie "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close."

Although it had 11 nominations, the nods for "Hugo" came largely from relatively minor categories such as art direction and costume design. The 10 nods for "The Artist," by contrast, were in a wide-range of groups including best supporting actress for Berenice Bejo and director for Michel Hazanavicius.

Best actress nominees were led by Meryl Streep portraying former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady," Glenn Close in a gender-bending role in "Albert Nobbs," Viola Davis for "The Help," Rooney Mara in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," and Michelle Williams in "My Week with Marilyn."

CLOONEY VS PITT

The best actor race sets up an intriguing match between friends George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Clooney was nominated for his role as a father trying to keep his family together in a time of crisis in "The Descendants," and Pitt in his turn as a numbers-crunching baseball executive in "Moneyball."

But the pair of Hollywood A-listers face stiff competition from Frenchman Jean Dujardin playing a fading silent picture star redeemed by love in "The Artist," as well as Gary Oldman in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and Demian Bichir in "A Better Life."

The Oscars are given out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and this year's winners will be named at a gala ceremony in Hollywood on February 26.

The awards included a wide variety of films from heart-warming "The Artist" to serious dramas like "The Descendants" and "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" to art films such as "The Tree of Life."

"I don't see a trend at all this year. You never want to see anyone left out but it (diversity) does make for great conversation," said Tom Sherak, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

"The Artist" has been a Hollywood darling this awards season winning best film honors from critics groups and taking the Golden Globe award for best film musical or comedy. In the best picture race, it may face its stiffest competition from "The Descendants," which was named the Golden Globe best film drama winner and also has been a critical hit.

"Filming 'The Artist' in Los Angeles was a dream come true, and to receive this recognition today is far beyond what I ever imagined," Hazanavicius said in a statement.

With so many nominees among best picture contenders, clues in the race come from the best director category because in the Oscar's 83 previous awards there has been a strong correlation between the best director and best film winners.

Joining Hazanavicius in that category are "The Descendants" maker Alexander Payne, Scorsese with "Hugo," Allen and his "Midnight in Paris" and Malick with "Tree of Life." Shut out was Tate Taylor, director of widely touted "The Help."

In other key awards, Bejo will be joined in the best supporting actress race by Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer, both in "The Help," Janet McTeer for "Albert Nobbs" and Melissa McCarthy for comedy "Bridesmaids."

Best supporting actor nominees were Kenneth Branagh in "My Week with Marilyn," Jonah Hill for "Moneyball," Nick Nolte in "Warrior" and veterans Christopher Plummer for "Beginners" and Max von Sydow in "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close."

Foreign language film nominees were Belgian movie "Bullhead," Canada's "Monsieur Lazhar," Iranian film "A Separation," "Footnote" from Israel and Poland's "In Darkness."

US official: Taliban should say they want peace

(AP) ? A top American diplomat visiting Afghanistan says the United States wants the Taliban to issue statements disassociating themselves from international terrorism and saying they want to join a peace process to end the 10-year war.

Marc Grossman, the special U.S. envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, spoke to reporters Sunday in Kabul alongside Afghanistan's Deputy Foreign Minister Jawed Ludin.

Ludin says the Afghan government supports having a Taliban political office opened in Qatar and would back an American decision to transfer some Taliban detainees from the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to Qatar.

Grossman stressed that only Afghans can decide their country's future, easing Afghan President Hamid Karzai's fears of being sidelined in the peace process.

Man lodges a nail in his brain and doesn?t realize it for 36 hours (Yahoo! News)

Miraculously, no permanent brain damage was suffered

A Chicago-area man accidentally drove a nail into his?brain last week, and didn't realize it for a full 36 hours.?Dante Autullo was working with a nailgun when the accident occured last Tuesday. Losing his grip while using the gun on top of a wall, it swung around and hit the back of his head. The collision fired a 3 1/2" nail into his skull so cleanly that the wound appeared to be minor.

The incident hardly fazed Autullo, who treated himself by taking a few Advil before finishing his nailing work. Afterward, he?put in an eight-hour shift of work at his job as a plow driver. It wasn't until Thursday that a strong headache sent him to his doctor, who discovered the nail via?X-ray.

Doctors removed the part of Autullo's skull which held the nail in a procedure that took about two hours.?Amazingly, Autullo does not appear to have lost any?brain function as a result of his injury. Doctors believe that complications are unlikely to develop.
