>>> and an incredible story of heroism and sacrifice during that massive outbreak of tornadoes last friday. it's about a mother who used her own body as a human shield to protect her children as their house came crashing down on top of all of them. we get her story tonight from nbc's tom costello.

>> reporter: huddled in the basement with a massive tornado bearing down on their new home, stephanie decker had just seconds to protect 8-year-old domenic and 5-year-old reese, so she wrapped them in a blanket and laid on top of them just as the house started coming apart.

>> everything was just slamming into my back. i had my children in the blanket and they were screaming. mommy, i can't live without you, i don't want to die, please don't let me die. i said, you're not going to die, we're going to make it.

>> reporter: when the storm cleared the home had been wiped from its foundation. stephanie and the kids were buried.

>> i took my phone and made a video to my husband -- telling him i love him.

>> reporter: it was domenic who climbed out and ran for help. a neighbor, sheriff's deputy brian lovens came running with friends to find stephanie bleeding heavily with a severed leg.

>> she's like, i'm dying. i ain't going to let you die.

>> reporter: using a belt as a tourniquet they got her out and into an suv for a mad dash to an ambulance. stephanie 's husband joe only knew she had stopped texting from the basement.

>> are you okay? are you guys okay?

>> reporter: he rushed home to find this. it was at the hospital he learned of stephanie 's injuries. one leg severed at that time kn -- at the knee, the other at the ankle. the kids didn't have a scratch.

>> she's alive and the kids are alive. so i told her, you get to see your kids grow up. that's all that matters.

>> i love you.

>> i love you, too.

>> reporter: at the hospital today stephanie said she's no hero.

>> i love my kids.

Pirates lock up their star

It was a long time coming, but Andrew McCutchen finally got the Pirates to beat the Justin Upton and Jay Bruce deals. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the two sides have agreed to a six-year, $51.5 million contract that will take care of all of the outfielder?s arbitration seasons and his first two years of free agency.

The deal includes a $14.75 million club option for 2018.

McCutchen, 25, made his first All-Star team last year, though he faded badly in the second half. He ended up hitting .259/.364/.456 with 23 homers and 89 RBI in 572 at-bats. The .820 OPS was right in between his marks from his rookie season in 2009 (.836) and his sophomore campaign in 2010 (.814).

McCutchen and the Pirates had been trying to come to terms on a deal since last summer, with McCutchen using the previous six-year deals signed by Upton ($51.25 million) and Bruce ($51 million) as a guideline. The Pirates were hoping to do something in the $40 million range, and when McCutchen failed to relent, there was even some talk that they could trade him.

McCutchen, Upton and Bruce were all chosen in the first-round of the 2005 draft, and though Upton is pretty clearly the biggest star in the group, he signed his deal before the 2010 season, back when he was less established. Bruce signed his with the Reds one years ago.

While this is more than the Pirates wanted to spend, it was a necessary deal for the team. McCutchen isn?t a superstar, but he plays a key position pretty well and he is a fan favorite. Had the Pirates opted to trade him rather than build around him, it would have furthered the idea that they have no intention of trying to compete. Now they have their best player tied up for a very long time.

Though Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson seems to believe that the franchise tag represents a badge of honor, there?s little honor in being prevented from becoming a free agent.

Sure, the franchise tag also constitutes a one-year offer for employment at a salary that the player wouldn?t be offered in any other line of work.? But it?s far lower than what the player would receive if the player were able to sign a multi-year contract with significant guaranteed money.

Without significant guaranteed money, the risk of serious injury remains on the player.

And so most players will be upset by the maneuver.? Players like Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes will decline to accept the offer.

?We have no plans to sign the tag at this time,? Grimes? agent, Ben Dogra, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Friday.? ?We hope to be able to continue to discuss [through] all the issues at the appropriate time.?

The use of the phrase ?no plans . . . at this time? allows Grimes to change his mind later.? But the fact that he?s not under contract also allows him and every other franchise player to withhold services indefinitely.? He can boycott the offseason program, training camp, and the preseason, and he can show up only days before the start of the regular season, sign the tender, and receive the full amount, fully guaranteed.

He also can stay away until Week 10 of the regular season, sign the tender then, finish the year, and hit the market in 2013 ? unless the team is willing to offer 120 percent of his 2012 salary in order to use the franchise tag a second time.

The only risk a player takes by not signing the franchise tender is that the team can rescind it at any time, making the player an unrestricted free agent.

While on one hand that gives the player what he wanted in the first place, on the other hand it can put the player on the market well after teams have blown their budgets and/or determined their depth charts.? Jackson?s intention to sign the tender in Philly surely was influenced in part by the fact that the Eagles twice before have rescinded the franchise tender.

The Falcons likely won?t do that with Grimes.? In an increasingly pass-happy league, they need him.? Especially since Dunta Robinson has yet to play at the level his own multi-year, free-agent contract would contemplate.

Grimes is surely holding out hope that, by holding out, the Falcons will give him the kind of multi-year deal that Grimes would have gotten if he hadn?t been blocked from becoming an unrestricted free agents.
